Alice Stevens

Alice Stevens is an Abenaki jeweler from Union, NH.

"I am of Abenaki descent, also French, English, and Scottish, but I relate mostly to my Abenaki heritage; this is who I am! When I was twenty-four years old I decided that I wanted to be a silversmith. I was already making jewelry. I remembered watching a friend of mine silversmith a few years before and I thought to myself, 'I can do that.' So I started to gather up the tools of the trade and one day I sat down and I did it! I never had any formal training or anything like that, but if I ran into a problem I did know some people to turn to for questions. So, here I am, ten years later.

"I started out making a lot of turquoise and red coral jewelry because I love it, but that is associated with the southwest and I wanted people to know that there were still Indians here in New England (people seem to assume that all the Indians are out west.) So I started making Trade Silver and working with wampum and putting Northeastern Woodland designs on everything. I'm proud of my Abenaki heritage and I want everyone to know that we are still here!"
