"Keel Pipe" bowl, c. 1680-1740, Maine
Native type, also made by French Canadian carvers and called "petit calumais," this type has a uniquely native style with small, etched designs that can be seen on the bowl and the body. It originally used a small wooden stem, which was attached to the bowl with a leather fiber, cord or brass wire.
